Letlhakane, located in Botswana’s Central District approximately 190 km west of Francistown, is a notable hub for diamond mining. The Letlhakane Diamond Mine, established in 1975 and operated by Debswana—a partnership between De Beers and the Botswana government—has been a significant contributor to the region’s economy. Although open-pit operations ceased in 2017, the mine continues to process tailings, extending its operational life by an estimated 20 years. This ongoing activity underscores Letlhakane’s enduring importance in Botswana’s precious stone industry.
Ghanzi, located in western Botswana near the Namibian border, is a region of significant interest for mining prospecting. The area is part of the Kalahari Copper Belt, a geological formation rich in copper and silver deposits. The district encompasses a large portion of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, offering established infrastructure that supports mining activities. Ghanzi’s strategic location and mineral wealth make it a promising area for mining investments.
The Kraaipan Greenstone Belt, located in South Africa’s North West province, is a significant geological formation known for its gold deposits. The area hosts the Kalgold open-pit gold mine, operated by Harmony Gold Mining Company, situated approximately 15 kilometers north of the town of Kraaipan. This region’s geological characteristics make it a focal point for gold prospecting activities.
The North-East District of Botswana, particularly around Francistown, is historically significant for gold mining. The Tati River area witnessed Southern Africa’s first gold rush in 1867, leading to the establishment of Francistown in 1897. Today, the region continues to attract interest for gold prospecting, with projects like the Giraffe Gold Project by Discovery Metals identifying promising gold-bearing quartz veins. Additionally, the Tati Greenstone Belt near Francistown hosts the Tati Gold Project, explored by Power Metal Resources, which has revealed high-grade gold intercepts in recent drilling campaigns. These ongoing explorations underscore the North-East District’s enduring potential in gold mining.
